The engineering design process and the drawings which result, are vital components of any construction job. For a typical reinforced-concrete building, a structural engineer calculates the location and size of beams and columns, and the quantity of steel reinforcement required for the structure to bear the load safely. In a road and drainage job, the engineer delineates the location and slope of the road, and specifies underground pipes so that they fit the lie of the land, minimize earthwork cut-and-fill and preclude the felling of trees. The electrical engineer specifies the transformer capacity the project needs, and calculates type and size of cabling – an expensive item. A good design not only saves time and money; it also protects against unnecessary headaches and frustration.

Good designers adhere strictly to building regulations, and always serve the best interests of the owner. Responsible designers will balance both public and private interests at all times. A win-win outcome usually results from effective communication and foresight. The lead designer will ensure that the plans of subordinate designers (mechanical, electrical, interior, landscape, etc.) are constantly monitored and coordinated, thereby avoiding costly errors.

Drawings are the means of communication between the various parties: owner, designers, contractors, quantity surveyors, customers, and government agencies. The contractor relies on them for bidding and construction. The project manager and owner use drawings as the basis for inspection, and decisions on acceptance. Government agencies, of course, want to see them for review and approval. WCEC designs seek to be ecologically conscious. We always recommend that our clients respect the environment. This includes, for example, measures such as building around existing trees, minimizing earthwork, and requiring that the contractor has large waste containers on-site during construction.

What is Engineering Design Process?

According to Wikipedia, engineering design is defined as: ‘the process of devising a system, component or process to meet desired needs. It is a decision-making process, in which the basic sciences, mathematics and engineering are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective. Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria for synthesis, analysis, construction, testing, and evaluation.

‘This practice can be divided up into a ten-step process, which includes identifying a need, defining the problem, conducting research, narrowing the research, analyzing set criteria, finding alternative solutions, analyzing possible solutions, making a decision, presenting the product, and communicating and selling the product. This process is not universal for all engineers or all designs. Individuals utilize their personal knowledge and experience to follow the path to design success.’
